Notes and Editorial Reviews
Okay, I do my best not to listen to organ music. I've got to be in the right mood, despite the fact that I really enjoy a lot of music composed for the instrument (especially by the French romantics: Franck, Widor, etc). The nicest thing about Bach's organ works is that, first, there are a lot of them, and second, if you have a complete set there's really no reason to pay attention to any baroque organ music by anyone else. Aficionados doubtless will consider this last comment unconscionably ignorant. Unconscionable it may be, but ignorant it is not: believe me, I've heard tons of the other stuff, and in my humble opinion if you know your Bach, you're not really missing much else. Actually, that opening sentence isn't quite true: I listen to Bach's Trios for organ rather frequently, and these are my versions of choice.
I have both Marie-Claire Alain's analog and digital cycles. This latter one is performed on a characterful assortment of instruments, providing for a wide range of timbres and registrations while producing a sound that is stylistically appropriate. To be honest, I'd just as soon listen to her play this same stuff on a huge Cavaillé-Coll organ with completely wacky registration. She can do no wrong. Her performances strike me as having all the best French sensibilities: precision that never turns mechanical, virtuosity in the toccatas that never draws attention to itself, clarity in the fugues and other contrapuntal movements (the Trios), and a feeling for phrasing that always finds the right tempo. In short, Alain has class, and taste, and as much personality as her rather impersonal instrument allows. This set (and its predecessor) have been my reference recordings for this music, and so they remain.

Review by Patsy Morita
The grande dame of French organists, Marie-Claire Alain recorded the complete organ music of Bach not once, not twice, but three times. This collection is the third recording, made in the late '80s and early '90s, and recorded digitally by Erato. For this version, Alain had access to restored, historic organs, including some that Bach himself would have played. This affected the way she approached the music, trying to choose the right organ to match the work and where it fell chronologically in Bach's career, and choosing the matching technique as well. In an interview with the magazine The Organ, Alain said "This third cycle is also much more musicological in approach, since we know much more now about performance practice in Bach's day and of other composers of his time: different position of the hands on the keyboard, different fingering, accentuation.... Our entire approach has to be rethought in terms of what we have since discovered." This more is a mature version of the master composer's works than her earlier ones, made by an artist well-respected for her dedication to early music performance practice as well as her musicality.
