American movie trend from the 1970s and a film genre of its own, Blaxploitation delivered, all along the decade, some of the kitschiest treasures, from the best B movies to blockbuster movies such as Shaft.
Until then relegated to minor roles, Blaxploitation enabled Afro-American actors to access leading roles at last. Some actors even became legendary for the genre, like the absolutely magnificent Pam Grier and Jim Kelly, the Afro-American version of Bruce Lee.
Apart from some militant movies such as Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, the world of Blaxploitation was all clichés: Sex, Dope, Pimps and Prostitutes, flashy & glitzy 70s and badass sound with bang-up OST.
Yep, that was the beginning of the 70s, peak period for Soul and Funk music. The best musicians of the time were producing their OST: Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Isaac Hayes or Lalo Schifrin ... giving birth to masterpieces of the genre.
The difference in quality between some movies and their OST sometimes makes us wonder if the movies weren't just an excuse....
This collection gathers the main Blaxploitation OST of the 1970s.
For the greatest pleasure of your eyes (the cover illustrations are terrific) and your ears... Enjoy!
