Notes and Editorial Reviews
Reviews of some of the original recordings that make up this set:

Pascal Rogé recorded Debussy's Preludes Book 1 for Decca some time ago, and he has remade them, together with Book 2, marking the start of a complete cycle of this composer's piano works. Although you won't find Krystian Zimerman's ultra-refined fingerwork and wide dynamic range, nor Paul Jacobs' linear perception, there's much to be said for Rogé's warm, colorful sonority and ear for nuance. His subtle rubatos in Danseuse de Delphes, Des pas sur la neige, and La sérénade interrompue are astutely timed. So are the jagged cakewalk rhythms of Minstrels and General Lavine-eccentric. If Rogé is somewhat leisurely and sedate in both La terrasse des audiences du claire de lune and Les fées sont d'exquises danseuses, his lean and sprightly Ondine surely compensates. Collectors seeking both books of Debussy Preludes on a single disc in modern sound will find Rogé comparable to Alain Planès (Harmonia Mundi), and a more stylish contender than Votapek (Ivory Classics), Viardo (ProPiano), or Rowland (SurroundedBy).

--Jed Distler, ClassicsToday.com

As beautiful a disc of Debussy's piano music as could be imagined, Pascal Rogé's second disc in his series of recordings of the master impressionist's piano music is as sublime as his first. Far more than his Debussy recordings for Decca from nearly 30 years earlier, Rogé's 2007 disc is intense, concentrated, and consistently inspired. His Estampes are amazingly evocative, his Children's Corner is incredibly affectionate, his Arabesques are charmingly insouciant, and his Suite Bergamasque is palpably sensuous. It goes without saying the Rogé's technique is up to the demands of the music -- his control of every aspect of piano playing is manifest in the elegance of every melody, in the balance of every harmony, and in the motion of every rhythm -- but unlike some of his contemporary countrymen. Rogé is far more a poet of the piano than a virtuoso of the keyboard and his performances breathe the air of the nights in Granada, glow with the radiant light of the moon, and dance with the swirl of the snow. Superbly recorded with lifelike fidelity for Onyx by the masterful Marijke de Villiers, this disc will please even those finicky Debussy fans who only approve of Michelangelo, Arrau or, in a pinch, Pollini.

French pianist Pascal Rogé's survey of the complete piano music of Claude Debussy marches on with this third volume featuring the Images, L'isle joyeuse, Réverie, and Pour le piano, plus five shorter works. As before, Rogé's tone is a many splendored thing: subtly varied in "Reflets dans l'eau," lucidly balanced in "Hommage à Rameau," and ringing and resounding in "Mouvement." And as before, his interpretations are wholly as one with the spirit of the music: bleakly melancholic in D'un cahier d'esquisses; stoically tragic in Berceuse héroïque, and sensually dreamy in Réverie. And as always, his technique is almost impossibly perfect as heard in the superbly poised sonorities of Cloches à travers les feuilles, the sublime luminosity of Et la lune descend sur le temple quit fût, the supreme clarity of Poissons d'or, and, above all, the headlong virtuosity of L'isle joyeuse. Warmly but brilliantly recorded, this disc as well as its companions should be heard by anyone who reveres the French fin de siècle composer.

-- All Music Guide

Claude Debussy was one of the most influential composers of all time. He along with his countryman Maurice Ravel came to represent the apex of what is known as Impressionism, a term that Debussy himself despised. He would influence generations of French composers, and his piano music has become some of the most loved in the repertoire mainly due to its dream-like quality and its exotic harmonic language.

The Études are Debussy's last significant contribution to the piano literature. Published in 1915, they came about after a rather lengthy fallow period during which the First World War, the death of his mother, and the onset of the cancer that would later take his life were the predominant concerns in his life. Modeled after the 27 Etudes of Frederic Chopin, each piece is intended to tackle a rather specific technical challenge. The original editions appeared in two books, the first of which dealt with finger dexterity, such as the playing of octaves, thirds and fifths. The second book addressed issues of playing rapid scales and other melodic patterns. Although Debussy had a pedagogical intent, these pieces stand alone as works of art, and if they are more challenging to listen to than perhaps the Preludes or the Suite Bergamasque, they still function well as concert pieces.

Pascal Rogé has long been recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of twentieth century French music. His recordings on Decca from some decades ago have been somewhat of a gold standard where this music is concerned. Now he revisits his canon in a new set of recordings for Onyx, a label which has managed to capture some very major talent from the ashes of the so-called ‘major labels' who continue to repackage their back catalogue and churn out endless star driven recitals and cross-over dreck. Gil Shaham and James Ehnes are two other stars who have made some masterful recordings for Onyx.

Rogé is to be most admired for his understated virtuosity. There is never any doubt that this man can play every note of even the most demanding music. That he does it with such ease and dexterity is what sets his playing apart. Yes, there are fireworks when called for, but they are radiant and sparkly fireworks, not bombastic explosions. Yes, there is elegant rubato, but it always remains just that: elegant. Can he sail across the keys at lightning speed? Indeed he can! But his flashy finger-work never fails to serve the music. Mr. Rogé leaves his ego at the door when he sits down to play the piano. His task is to present the composer's intentions without a major fuss, and he does so to great success.

These Études require careful listening. They are not the kind of music that you put on to nap to, in spite of the fact that a couple of the works are indeed the expected dreamscapes. But the effort pays off, as you find in this music the essence of Debussy's art as both a pianist and a composer. He explores all of the capabilities and shades of color available in the piano, and paves a few new roads of his own. Play this disc when you have the energy to listen with care. You won't be sorry.
