Notes and Editorial Reviews
Schubert struggled his whole life with the large scale vocal forms: he never completed a whole opera. Lazarus is a large-scale Cantata for 6 soloists, chorus and orchestra. It is a revolutionary work, full of dramatic moments, reflecting the wondrous events of the biblical story of the resurrection of Lazarus. Schubert unfortunately never completed the work, and only two acts survived. In 1994 choral conductor Helmuth Rilling commissioned the Russian composer Edison Denisov to complete the work, which he did in his own style. A very special release, excellently performed by Helmuth Rilling and his choir and orchestra, and 6 splendid soloists, among which great bass-baritone Matthias Goerne. Full text included.

Pressestimmen
